Iceland: Location List

Vilate + Curt
April 2020

*Disclaimer: Any locations mentioned in this document are ideas and suggestions only. I cannot guarantee the privacy, seclusion, aesthetic look, or logistical feasibility of any location. Any additional permits or fees required by the venue or local jurisdiction shall be the responsibility of the client.

**High Altitude: It is important to be aware of the effect of high altitudes on yourself and/or your guests. Regardless of level of fitness, some people can get headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath at altitudes over 8,000 ft. Drink tons of water and consider bringing doctor-recommended medications that can alleviate symptoms. Acclimating at altitude for a few days before your wedding can also help. It is your responsibility to know your level of ability for hiking—especially at high altitudes.

***4WD roads: If you plan on using a location up a 4WD road, it is your responsibility to determine your level of experience, your car’s performance, or to hire a professional. Many high-alpine 4WD roads may not be fully accessible due to snow, even into mid-July. Call a local ranger or jeep operator, and  look at trail reports to determine if the road you’re interested in will/should be accessible on your date. Many high-alpine 4WD roads are not for the faint of heart, and if passengers have a fear of heights, it may not be the best choice. Watch youtube videos of the drive, and only have experienced 4WD drivers with capable vehicles attempt difficult roads—there are many 4WD vehicle operators (Jeep tour companies) that can assist with this as well.

Ceremony location ideas

Iceland is so beautiful and diverse. No matter where you decide to do you ceremony it will be breath taking and so special. After hour and hour of research a found a long list of things I'd love to explore with you and some are such perfect locations for private ceremonies. I recommend picking an area where you are most drawn and then the day before or the day of we pick your ceremony spot spontaneously. Depending on weather and crowds some might be better than others. We can use other locations in that area for your portraits and the other parts of the island we can explore the days before and after your ceremony. But once you pick an area we can figure out logistics like vendors, permits and airbnb's.

Here are the 4 areas I recommend. You can see more in detail what each of my saved pins are HERE in my google maps.

Below I will list my top choice locations in each area for your ceremony:

1

2

3

4

Area 1:

A great location because of the increible cliffs and it's an excellent place to see a ton of unique sea birds like the Puffins which you can only see in very few places in the world. Said to be "the end of the world and the best views of Iceland".

The Látrabjarg Cliffs(the first blue point to the left)

Distance/Difficulty: Short 1km hike, not too difficult but can be windy. Steep cliffs.

Starting/finishing point: Bjargtangi bílastæði Parking lot

Trailhead Accessibility: Just under 6 hours from Reykjavík but there are many close airbnb options.

Leave No Trace Information: Take everything you bring back, Don't feed the birds.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate): Because its off of the ring road and is a bit out of the way very few people should be there.

Area 2:

If you guys are fans of Game of Thrones you'll love this place. Because of the popular connection it can get busy here so it's important that if this is your ceremony spot or for portraits that we come very early in the morning or late at night and try and see the northern lights.

Kirkjufellsfoss
(waterfall)

Distance/Difficulty: Super easy walk from the parking lot.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 2 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb

Leave No Trace Information: Be careful of moss, don't leave any garbage.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate): Depend on the time of day. April will be less busy. We will need to check this location out before to make sure we can get a beautiful ceremony location. Higher likelihood of less privacy.

Area 3:

The black sand beach is where all the main stream tourist go. The cliffs are the view from about. And it's breath taking. If we come early we can find spot that's private. It's pretty big so if there are peoplein an area we will walk further away and find a new spot with no one. They we can explore the beach below for portraits after the ceremony.

Reynisfjara Beach cliffs(The black sand beach + portraits on the beach after

Distance/Difficulty: Super easy walk from the parking lot.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 234 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb

Leave No Trace Information: Be careful of moss, don't leave any garbage.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate): Highly recommend sunrise, not only is the view incredible but it'll be private then. Sunrise is between 8-9am.

Below on the beach

Area 4:

Such an incredible place. So many options here. Depending on the tide we can get incredible reflection shots. A 7.33 USD pp charge that I think is worth it(it's private property). We can spend hours exploring and taking epic photos.

Stokksnes beach

Distance/Difficulty: Super easy walk from the parking lot.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 6 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb in or close to Hofn which is 22 minutes away.

Leave No Trace Information: Don't leave any garbage.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate): There is lots of space so we can easily find a private spot if we  walk a bit away from the main part. But it is less known and popular than main attractions.

Portrait locations Ideas

An Icelandic dream. Unfortunately due to disrespectful people there are ropes everywhere so not recommended for the ceremony but definitely for exploring and potential portraits or drone shots.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Distance/Difficulty: Super easy walk from the parking lot.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 3.30 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb in or 1 hour from Vik.

Leave No Trace Information: Stay on trail. Pay attention to signs. Fragile soil and moss.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate): Minimal  due to it being a very popular stop and close to the ring road.

Portrait locations Idea 2

A very cool and unique scene. Black sands and an old plane crash. I'd recommend this location just before sunset and then so night photography here.

Solheimasandur Plane Wreck

Distance/Difficulty: Super easy walk from the parking lot but is 1 hour each way. Bright warm clothes to be able to enjoy the walk.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 2:20 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb or stay in the truck camper that night.

Leave No Trace Information: Be careful in and around the wreck to not be destructive.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate):  Can be busy could be private. At night it should be private.

Portrait locations Idea 3

The iconic waterfall in Iceland for a reason. We can do photos in front and above. Fun for drone shots.

Skógafoss waterfall

Distance/Difficulty: Super easy walk from the parking lot with a little bit of a hike to the top. Well worth it.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 2:20 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb or stay in the truck camper that night.

Leave No Trace Information: Be respectful of sign.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate):  Can be super busy could be private. We may get lucky due to the time of year and day.

Portrait locations Idea 4

Beautiful cliffs, small quiets black sand beaches and lots of wild life.

Snæfellsjökull National Park

Distance/Difficulty: Easy walk/Hiking around and exploring from the parking lot.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 3 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb or stay in the truck camper that night.

Leave No Trace Information: Respect the wild life.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate):  It's off the beaten path so most people won't come here.

Portrait locations Idea 5

Glacier watching and little + big ice bergs on the beach. Something very unique to see.

jokulsarlon + diamond Beach

Distance/Difficulty: Easy walk/Hiking around and exploring from the parking lot.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 5:15 hours from Reykjavík or closer airbnb or stay in the truck camper that night.

Leave No Trace Information: Be respectful of the nature and area.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate):  Hit or miss in busy-ness.

Portrait locations Idea 6

An incredible place created by a huge iruption from the near by volcano about 250 years ago where moss has overgrown the lava rock. It's a very unique scene

Eldraun Lava Field

Distance/Difficulty: Easy walk/Hiking around and exploring.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there or the side of the road.

Trailhead Accessibility: It's kind of all over but this specific field is about 45 minutes from Vik. It's a huge area and we'll stop when it's beautiful.

Leave No Trace Information: Super important to stay on trail and not walk on the moss.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate):  Hit or miss in busy-ness. But it's huge so we can easily wander away from any crowd.

Adventure Idea 1

Mentioned as one of the best experiences in Iceland. A beautiful hike in the mountains and finish with a hot swim.

Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River

Distance/Difficulty: A bit of a harder hike. 1 hour from the parking lot. A bit uphill. We will need crampons. But I've read it is so worth it.

Starting/finishing point: A parking lot right there.

Trailhead Accessibility: 1 hours from Reykjavík son this may be a perfect first adventure or last adventure on the way back.

Leave No Trace Information: Be respectful of the nature and area.

Privacy/Seclusion (estimate):  Hit or miss in busy-ness. Recommended to go early.

Adventure Idea 2

The epic experience of hiking and then climbing the biggest glacier in Europe. Unfortunately the ice caves are only available until March but this is the just as cool!

Spend 4.5 hours exploring the hue glacier and learn how to ice climb. All the climbing gear is provided. Price is only $162 per person.

For a cheaper alternative you can just hike the glacier for only $77 per person.
